Part-Time CFO Services In Basingstoke
Funding, strategy and board leadership for owner-managed businesses in north Hampshire
Secantor provides part-time CFOs to owner-managed businesses in Basingstoke and north Hampshire, bringing the strategic financial leadership of a chief financial officer for the days you need and none of the full-time cost. Our CFOs join the directors to work on funding, planning and where the business is heading over the next few years, and the first step is a visit to you in Basingstoke.
Our national guide to the Fractional CFO role covers the model, and our board-level support for Basingstoke businesses shows the wider range.
What Does A Part-Time CFO Do For A Basingstoke Business?
Secantor's part-time CFOs help Basingstoke businesses make the big financial decisions with confidence: where to invest, how to fund it and what the business could be worth. Day to day control sits with a Finance Director; the CFO looks further out.
- Cash and the bank. Forecasts and a lender relationship that hold up under scrutiny.
- The plan. A multi-year budget and financial model tied to what the board wants to achieve.
- Funding. The right finance for growth, and the case that secures it.
- Deals and exits. Leadership through acquisitions, disposals and sales.
- Board reporting. Monthly figures and KPIs the board can act on.
Our Part-Time Finance Director looks after reporting and control day to day. The same role is also called a fractional, outsourced or virtual CFO.
When Does A Basingstoke Business Need A Part-Time CFO?
Secantor's part-time CFO service suits a Basingstoke business that faces a bigger financial decision than its team can carry on its own. Typical triggers include a bank that wants a credible plan, a cash squeeze, a funding round, an acquisition or a sale. In the toughest cases it means a business that needs a turnaround. Our blog on when an SME needs a CFO sets out the signs.
How Has A Part-Time CFO Helped A Business Through A Turnaround And Sale?
A long-established family-owned retail group, with its own manufacturing arm and several hundred staff, was making losses of millions of pounds over successive years. Its bank's support unit referred it to Secantor when it had too little cash to cover the following month's payroll.
Secantor acted as Finance and Turnaround Director. The first step was a daily cash forecast giving four months' visibility, and personal conversations with creditors that led to time to pay arrangements the business then kept. An 18 day strategic review followed, with interviews across head office and production and visits to outlets, and it concluded that the business could be turned round rather than sold or merged. The directors and shareholders agreed the plan, and so did the bank, which supported it throughout.
The board was restructured, with new directors bringing retail and finance skills, a three year business and financial plan gave every budget holder clear accountability, and monthly management accounts and KPIs went to a board meeting each month. Production was restructured and modernised, surplus property was sold, and a new Retail Director put every outlet under management accountability, with a performance-related pay scheme and a business plan for each store. After eight months a new bank provided the larger funding the business needed to invest.
A £2m annual loss became a £250,000 profit the following year and £1.5m in the year after. In year three Secantor initiated and guided the sale of the group to a national chain for £14m. Read the full case study.
How Does A Part-Time CFO Work With You?
Secantor starts a part-time CFO engagement in Basingstoke with a visit to your premises, to understand your ambitions for the business and what is getting in the way, then recommends the advisor whose experience fits. The CFO then works in agreed days each month around your board, your bank and any deal in progress, with more days when a funding round, a turnaround or a sale needs them.
What Does A Part-Time CFO Cost In Basingstoke?
Secantor charges £1,200 a day plus VAT and expenses for a part-time CFO in Basingstoke. A typical start is two to four days a month, and the commitment grows or shrinks with what the business is trying to achieve. Our cost guide explains the figures.
Which Arrangement Suits A Basingstoke Business?
Secantor's part-time CFO suits a Basingstoke business whose main question is funding, strategy, a turnaround or a sale. If reporting and control are the weak point, begin with a Part-Time Finance Director. Where the board lacks an outside voice, a Non-Executive Director fits. Where a vacancy or a deal needs a senior lead straight away, an Interim CFO can start at short notice. Our comparison of Fractional vs Part-Time vs Interim CFO sets out the differences.
How Does A Part-Time CFO Work With Your Existing Team?
Secantor's part-time CFOs work with the finance team, accountants, bank and board of a Basingstoke business and do not replace any of them. They add the senior strategic layer above your finance function. Bookkeeping and outsourced accounts are not part of what we provide. For a business heading towards a sale, our Exit Planning service sets out how we prepare it.
